D. Zelinsky & Sons, Inc. was founded in 1884 by David Zelinsky (Kenneth Zelinsky’s Great Uncle). David established its first office in Oakland, California; shortly thereafter, he moved its offices to San Francisco. From then on, D. Zelinsky & Sons became one of the largest painting contractors in the United States with offices throughout the cities of California which not only included Oakland; but, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Sacramento. Associate offices were then established in Seattle (Washington), and Washington, D.C.
Ken Zelinsky started with D. Zelinsky & Sons, Inc. after his service with the U.S. Marine Corps. He began as an apprentice painter in 1957. After serving his apprenticeship and working as a job foreman, Ken entered estimating, and shortly assumed the responsibility of the branch manager of the firm’s Sacramento operations.
In 1971 D. Zelinsky & Sons opened its branch office in Honolulu, Hawaii with Ken as the Vice President and General Manager of operations. Working long hours with tenacity and dedication, Ken managed to grow the Hawaii operations’ workforce to 60 men and increased the volume of work tenfold within four years.
In 1976, Ken purchased the Hawaii branch continuing the legacy with D. Zelinsky & Sons of Hawaii, Inc. Ken continued the success of the business with invaluable partners including his secretary and lifelong partner “wife”, Constance “Hap” Fischer, and his superintendent, Sung Man U is also known as “Johnny U”.
In 2002 John and Lari moved to Hawaii to learn the business and help Ken slow down so he and his wife Hap could enjoy their retirement. In 2012 Ken transferred the company ownership to his three children, Steve, Lari, and Matt. His Daughter Lari Zelinsky-Bloom and his son-in-law John Bloom now manage and run the operations together.
As of 2019, Lari is now a 100% shareholder and CEO of the Zelinsky Company. John is President and Director of Business Development. John and Lari’s son Chad joined the company in 2012 as a project manager and estimator.
Chad is the next generation and makes it his sole responsibility to wear multiple hats and be involved in all aspects of the family business. Chad is currently the Vice President and overseeing each division. They work together with the same commitment and dedication as Ken when he was building the Hawaii operations. As the fifth generation of the Zelinsky heritage, they plan to continue the business and the legacy into the future. John, Lari, and Chad know that they are only a small part of the continuous success and that it takes a loyal team of dedicated employees to carry the company into the future.
The Zelinsky family also owns the Lazy Z Resort in Twain Harte, California. The ranch was once owned by Ken’s father, Harold Zelinsky, and operated as a guest resort. Ken’s oldest son Stephen is the current resident operator of the resort. Stephen also runs a painting business (S.K. Zelinsky Painting). Ken’s youngest, Matthew, also lives on the resort property; he is a retired Sergeant with the Tuolumne County Sheriff Office. Matthew is involved with the family business as well and is a very talented carpenter who is responsible for the recent remodel of the cabins at the resort.
